Zero Point Clamping Modular System
The modular clamping rail system is an alternative to conventional vices for flexible use on the machine tool. Our multiple clamping systems enable safe operation even in heavy-duty machining. We enable any clamping width and multiple clamping with just one system thanks to endlessly connectable clamping rails. Using the modular clamping rail system offers benefits including high pairing accuracy of 0.03 mm due to clamping rails being coupled together infinitely. The modular rail system has lower height compared to conventional vices – 50% less due to the maximum utilization of the Z travel distance. Finally, the modular rail system is user-friendly due to its low weight, in fact it has a -70% reduction in weight compared to conventional vices. See for yourself how you can benefit from using a modular clamping rail system – watch the video.
In the pursuit of maximum machine uptime, the Zero-Point Clamping Modular System stands as one of the most impactful investments a shop can make. By shifting the focus from “setup on the machine” to “setup off the machine,” zero-point technology effectively eliminates the traditional bottlenecks associated with part changeovers and fixture alignment.
What is Zero-Point Clamping?
At its core, a zero-point system utilizes high-precision pull studs (retention knobs) mounted to the bottom of a fixture or workpiece, which then lock into a base plate mounted on the machine table.
Instant Alignment: The system provides a “zero-point” reference that is repeatable to within 5 microns (0.0002″). This means once a job is dialed in, it never needs to be “indicated in” again.
Mechanical vs. Pneumatic Locking: Most systems utilize high-strength spring packages to keep the tool clamped mechanically, using pneumatic or hydraulic pressure only to release the mechanism. This ensures the workpiece remains securely held even in the event of a power or air pressure loss.
The Business Case for Modular Workholding
The primary advantage of a modular system is the drastic reduction in “spindle-down” time.
Parallel Processing: Operators can build the next setup on a secondary base plate while the machine is still running the current job. When the first job finishes, the changeover takes seconds rather than hours.
Scalability: Because the system is modular, you can start with a single-station base and expand to multi-station “tombstone” setups as your production needs grow.
Interchangeability: A standardized zero-point grid allows you to move a fixture from a 3-axis mill to a 5-axis center with zero loss in accuracy or setup time.
Key Technical Specifications to Consider
Clamping Force: High-performance systems like the Lyndex-Nikken modular series offer thousands of pounds of pull-back force, providing the rigidity required for aggressive heavy-duty milling.
Debris Protection: Modern clamping modules feature integrated air-blow systems that clear chips and coolant from the interface during the changeover, ensuring a clean and accurate connection every time.
Vibration Dampening: The massive contact area and specialized metallurgy of the base plates help absorb harmonic vibrations, which directly improves surface finishes and extends the life of your cutting tools.
