Peter Bowman, Flying S Inc. Testimonial
Flying S Inc. manufactures aerospace and defense components for basically anything that flies. To machine these parts out of carbine fiber and metallic materials, Peter Bowman, Manufacturing Engineer, at Flying S Inc. relies on Lyndex-Nikken shrink fit holders and an Elbo Controlli Nikken presetter. He thought he would just use the presetter to check the tool lengths of tooling, but he found that for single point thread milling it is also extremely helpful in verifying that the cutting edges of small thread mills are proper and the diameters are right. He also verifies corner radius prior to putting it into the machine so they are getting the right surface profiles on aerospace parts. Watch the video to hear more from Peter.
Flying S Inc. has built a reputation for tackling the most complex engineering challenges in the aerospace and space exploration sectors. In this testimonial, Peter Bowman discusses how the strategic implementation of Lyndex-Nikken high-performance tooling and rotary solutions has empowered their team to achieve the extreme tolerances and process reliability required for mission-critical flight hardware.
The Challenge: Complex Aerospace Geometries
Manufacturing components for the aerospace industry involves working with difficult-to-machine materials and incredibly intricate geometries. For the team at Flying S, the primary challenges included:
Maintaining Sub-Micron Accuracy: Ensuring that large-scale aerospace parts meet exact specifications across long machining cycles.
Eliminating Vibration in Deep Cavities: Reducing chatter when using long-reach tooling in complex structural components.
Maximizing 5-Axis Efficiency: Leveraging advanced rotary movement to reduce setups and improve the concentricity of multi-sided parts.
The Solution: High-Rigidity Tooling and Rotary Technology
By integrating Lyndex-Nikken’s advanced 5-axis rotary tables and high-performance tool holders, Flying S was able to achieve a more rigid interface between the machine spindle and the workpiece. Key components of the solution include:
Nikken Rotary Tables: Providing the high clamping torque and precision indexing necessary for heavy-duty milling and precise boring in 5-axis configurations.
Advanced Tool Holding: Utilizing precision-ground chucks and collets that minimize runout, ensuring that every cutting edge performs optimally even during aggressive material removal.
Technical Collaboration: The ongoing partnership between Flying S and Lyndex-Nikken ensures that the shop has access to the latest innovations in machining technology and application support.
Impact on Flight-Critical Manufacturing
The success of Flying S Inc. is a testament to the importance of choosing the right technology partners. In an industry where “good enough” is never an option, the combination of Flying S’s engineering expertise and Lyndex-Nikken’s precision hardware ensures that every component produced is flight-ready. This partnership continues to drive innovation in the production of airframe structures, satellite components, and advanced propulsion systems.
