ER vs SK Test Cut
While the ER (Extended Range) system is the most common collet standard in the world due to its versatility, the SK (Slim Chuck) system is engineered specifically for high-performance machining where “good enough” isn’t an option.
The Physics of the 8° Taper
The most critical difference between these two systems is the angle of the taper.
ER Systems typically use a 16-degree taper. While this allows the collet to collapse over a wider range of shank sizes, it sacrifices surface contact and concentricity.
SK Systems utilize a much shallower 8-degree taper. This design doubles the surface contact area between the collet and the holder.
This shallow angle translates directly into 4x the gripping force of a standard ER chuck. By pulling the collet deeper into the holder, the SK system creates a rigid, near-monoblock connection that drastically reduces vibration and “chatter” during heavy milling.
The TiN (Titanium Nitride) Advantage
One often overlooked component of the SK system is the Titanium Nitride (TiN) bearing nut. In a standard ER nut, friction between the nut and the collet can cause “twist” or misalignment during tightening, leading to increased runout.
