Jeffrey Sundwall, Chemring Energetic Devices Testimonial

Wednesday, October 2, 2024

At Lyndex-Nikken, we take pride in supporting industry leaders like Chemring Energetic Devices (CED) in their mission to produce high-reliability energetic components. In this testimonial, Jeffrey Sundwall discusses how integrating high-performance tooling solutions has directly impacted their ability to maintain extreme precision in critical manufacturing environments.

The Challenge: Mission-Critical Precision

Manufacturing energetic devices requires a level of consistency and safety that few other industries demand. For Chemring, the primary challenges included:

  • Maintaining Tight Tolerances: Ensuring that complex components meet rigorous aerospace and defense specifications without variation.

  • Maximizing Tool Life: Reducing the frequency of tool changes in high-stakes production runs to maintain process stability.

  • Eliminating Vibration: Minimizing chatter to ensure superior surface finishes on sensitive materials.

The Solution: Advanced Tool Holding and Live Tooling

By implementing Lyndex-Nikken’s advanced tool holding systems and live tooling solutions, CED was able to achieve a more rigid interface between the machine spindle and the cutting tool. This stability is the foundation of their success, allowing for:

  • Improved Runout Control: High-precision collet chucks and milling chucks ensure that tools stay on center, reducing uneven wear and part rejection.

  • Increased Efficiency: Faster cycle times and more predictable production schedules, allowing CED to meet demanding delivery timelines for their global customers.

  • Technical Support and Collaboration: Beyond the hardware, the partnership between Chemring and Lyndex-Nikken ensures that technical expertise is always available to optimize new machining setups.

Impact on the Aerospace and Defense Sector

Chemring Energetic Devices serves as a vital link in the supply chain for aerospace and defense contractors. The reliability of their components is non-negotiable. Through the use of Lyndex-Nikken technology, CED continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in energetic device manufacturing, ensuring that every part that leaves their facility meets the highest standards of excellence.

Jeffrey Sundwall, CNC Machine Shop Production and Tool Manager, at Chemring Energetic Devices was initially looking for shrink fit holders to machine aerospace and defense parts. But after Lyndex-Nikken did comparison cuts for him using shrink fit, SK collet chucks, and ER collet chucks, the SK holder by far produced the best results due to clean chips and no vibration from the machine. Jeff was sold on Lyndex-Nikken SK collet chucks! Watch the video to hear directly from Jeffrey.
